CHILDREN’S CLASSES @ Shake it dance studio

Leslie Carvery has a long history of teaching and mentoring kids. Having a strong connection to her community Carvery is always finding ways to introduce this foriegn dance to neighborhood kids .Side street kids was a very successful after school program that ran for 2 years at Shake it. The children from side street learned more then dance in their 3 hour session at the club. A hot meal was prepared by them served , they had help with homework and school project , did community event and dance for community events.

Leslie is hoping to find community support this Fall so that the side street kids can enjoy another year of dance and fun.

In 1999 I took a trip to Puerto Rico for the World Salsa Congress. After being delayed in the JFK airport in New York I met two beautiful youths, who were also on route to Puerto Rico for the same event. time together they explain the nature of their group “Side street Kids” I fell in love with the idea and a few years later I had a similar project with the same name.

For 2 years the 4c’s founded this project. children between ages 7 to 12 were picked up from their school .They had a snack while working on homework projects. Selected helpers would do kitchen duties of preparing food and setting the tables. after a healthy meal we did an hours dance lesson and escorted the children home.

The kids in inner city have very little to do and often find trouble , a group like SSK can do amazing things for their confidence and mentoring. You can help by donating funds, volunteering to help or organizing fundraisers with us.
